KS5 Extended Project Qualification
Cyber Security :: Traditional
EPQ Curriculum Intention
We deliver two distinct qualifications:
AQA Traditional EPQ
The AQA Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a Level 3 qualification designed to encourage independent learning and critical thinking. It allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, culminating in a substantial piece of work such as a dissertation, investigation, performance, or artefact. Worth up to 28 UCAS points, the EPQ is highly regarded by universities and employers alike, as it demonstrates initiative, research skills, and the ability to manage a long-term project—qualities that are essential for success in higher education and beyond.
Students undertaking the AQA EPQ develop a wide range of transferable skills, including planning, time management, academic writing, and presentation. The qualification is flexible and can be tailored to complement A-level subjects or explore areas not covered in the standard curriculum. It also provides an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their passion and commitment to a subject, often strengthening university applications and interview performance.
Cyber EPQ
Delivered in partnership with the Baker Dearing Trust, the CyberEPQ is the UK’s first and only Extended Project Qualification focused exclusively on Cyber Security. Offered free of charge to all UTC Sixth Form students, this Level 3 qualification is worth up to 28 UCAS points and provides a powerful foundation for anyone considering a future in the cyber sector.
Developed by a consortium of education and industry partners, the CyberEPQ equips students with a broad understanding of cyber security through a series of structured modules, culminating in a 5,000-word research project and presentation. It also helps students develop essential soft skills such as independent research, critical thinking, and academic writing.
Importantly, the CyberEPQ has received CyberFirst brand recognition from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)—part of GCHQ—meaning it is officially recognised as part of the CyberFirst talent pipeline. This makes it a valuable stepping stone for students aiming to progress into CyberFirst programmes, university bursaries, apprenticeships, or careers in cyber security and intelligence.
Whether students are aspiring coders, analysts, or simply curious about the digital world, the CyberEPQ offers a unique opportunity to explore cyber security in depth and gain a competitive edge in a fast-growing field.
